Want to keep an eye on your home without signing up to yet another monthly bill? Good news: the best home security camera UK setup for most people costs less than a takeaway for two, records to a cheap memory card and never asks for a subscription. Here’s what to buy, from a tight budget right up to a proper wired system.

Argos links are plain links and earn us nothing.

Prices checked on 24 Oct 2026. We only quote prices we could confirm on the day. Where we couldn’t, we say “check the live price”. Deals change quickly, so always check before you buy. We haven’t tested these cameras ourselves; picks are based on manufacturer and retailer specifications.

  • Best with no wiring: Tapo C460 KIT 4K solar, £99.99 at Argos and on Amazon.

Why we skipped the subscriptions

Lots of popular cameras are cheap to buy but expect a monthly fee before they’ll save your footage. Over a few years, that fee can cost more than the camera. Every pick here, except the doorbell, can record locally to a memory card or a base station, so once you’ve paid for the kit, that’s it. Cloud plans are still there if you want them, but they’re optional.

The budget setup everyone should have: Tapo C510W + Tapo C220

1. Tapo C510W 2K outdoor pan/tilt camera

This is the one we’d buy first. It’s £37.99 at Argos and £34.99 on Amazon as we write. For that you get 2K (2304 x 1296) video and a camera that pans a full 360° and tilts 130°, so one unit can watch a whole driveway or garden. It does full-colour night vision, auto-tracks people as they move, and has a siren and light to scare off unwanted visitors. There’s two-way audio too, so you can talk to the delivery driver from your sofa.

Storage is the clever bit. Pop in a microSD card up to 512GB and it records locally with no fees. Tapo’s cloud service, Tapo Care, is optional, with a 30-day free trial.

The catch: it runs from the mains, so you’ll usually need to drill through a wall for the cable (Argos lists a 3m lead). It only works on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and some Argos reviewers mention false alerts from rain.

2. Tapo C220 2K indoor pan/tilt camera

Pair the C510W with the C220 for the inside of the house. Tapo says it records in 2K (4MP) and pans 360° and tilts 114°, so it can cover a whole room from a shelf. It has AI detection, two-way audio, night vision up to around 30ft and, again, microSD storage up to 512GB. We couldn’t confirm the price on 24 Oct, so check the live price at Argos or on Amazon.

The catch: it’s an indoor camera, so keep it out of the weather. Both Tapo cameras use the same app, which keeps things simple.

Don’t forget the memory card

Neither Tapo camera comes with a microSD card, so add one to your basket. Both support cards up to 512GB. Tapo’s advice on Argos is to use a high-endurance card if you plan to record 24/7. If you only record when motion is detected, any good-quality card will do the job. Our storage upgrades guide and microSD how-to explain more about card speeds.

Our card pick: for cameras that record around the clock, go for a high-endurance card such as the SanDisk High Endurance microSD card on Amazon. Check the size you’re buying, as both Tapo cameras take cards up to 512GB.

Step up: no drilling, smarter doorbell

3. Tapo C460 KIT 4K solar camera

If drilling holes isn’t an option, this is the answer. It’s £99.99 at Argos and on Amazon. You get 4K video, colour night vision with a built-in spotlight, AI detection of people, pets and vehicles, and a solar panel that keeps the battery topped up. Tapo says 45 minutes of direct sun powers it for a day. It’s IP66 weatherproof and records locally to microSD up to 512GB.

The catch: it doesn’t do true continuous recording. Tapo offers a 24/7 Capture mode, but it uses more battery. It also mounts magnetically to its bracket, so pick a sheltered spot if your house gets battered by wind.

4. Ring Battery Video Doorbell Plus

A video doorbell covers the spot where most deliveries and callers turn up. Ring’s Battery Video Doorbell Plus records 1536p HD video with a head-to-toe view, so you can see parcels on the step, and it has colour night vision and a quick-release battery. Check the live price at Argos or on Amazon; Amazon only had third-party sellers when we checked.

The catch: this is the one pick that leans on a subscription. You need a Ring plan, sold separately, to save and replay recordings. Check Ring’s UK plan prices before you buy.

Going pro: bigger homes and full coverage

5. eufyCam S3 Pro 2-camera kit

This is the premium wireless choice. The kit includes two 4K cameras and a HomeBase, with no monthly fee. eufy says the cameras see in colour in very low light without a spotlight, use radar plus PIR sensors to cut down on false alerts, and have built-in solar panels. The HomeBase has 16GB of storage, expandable up to 16TB. Check the live price at Argos or on Amazon.

The catch: it costs a lot more than the Tapo setup, so it only makes sense if you want premium night vision and fewer false alerts.

6. Reolink 4K PoE system (4 cameras, 2TB)

If you want everything recorded, all day, every day, go wired. This Reolink kit gives you four 4K cameras and an 8-channel recorder with a 2TB hard drive inside. It supports 24/7 continuous recording, and you can add an external drive for more space. It uses PoE (Power over Ethernet), so a single cable to each camera handles both power and video. Check the live price on Amazon.

The catch: you’ll need to run a cable to every camera, which is a weekend job or an electrician’s bill.

Quick setup tips

  • Check your Wi-Fi first. Stand where the camera will go and test the signal on your phone. The Tapo C510W needs a 2.4GHz network.
  • Mind the neighbours. Point cameras at your own property. Use privacy zones if they catch the street or next door’s garden.
  • Lock down your account. Use a strong password and turn on two-factor sign-in in the camera app.
  • Keep your phone and PC updated. Your camera app is only as safe as the device it runs on. Our piece on Windows 11 24H2 security updates explains why that matters.

Our recommendation

For most UK homes, start with the Tapo C510W outside and the Tapo C220 inside, plus a 512GB microSD card in each. That’s proper 2K coverage, colour night vision outdoors and no monthly bill. If you can’t drill, swap the C510W for the C460 KIT. Only go for eufy or Reolink if you need premium or round-the-clock recording.
